Who is Sierra?

Picture
Sierra is a woman of a multicultural upbringing. Raised in Ithaca NY, a cultural mecca of artists, musicians, intellectuals, scientists, academics and free thinkers, she was exposed to world music and dance starting at a young age. Summers spent in the South of France with her French father’s family allowed for her to be raised bilingual.

Since she was able to communicate, Sierra has been a performer, passionately singing, dancing, acting and playing instruments. She wrote, performed in and executed her first on stage performance for the public in the fourth grade.

From the age of 9 until she moved to NYC, she sang and traveled with a national music group called Vitamin L, performing songs marketed to children inspiring and promoting acceptance, diversity, community, self-expression and other important lessons in character education.  As an adult Sierra adapted the original songs into a curriculum for young children in summer camps and a Harlem Learning center, also incorporating dance, sign-language, art projects and musical instruments.

From the age of 11 though high-school completion, Sierra starred in many musicals, plays, choir performances, vocal competitions, dance recitals and maintained a seat in Orchestra playing Viola.  During summers she taught children dance and theater and went to performing arts camps such as Stagedoor Manor & the Hangar Theatre Company.

Being accepted into Marymount Manhattan College’s Musical Theatre program was what ultimately brought Sierra to New York City.  Since 2004 she has been taking advantage of New york City life, (with frequent travels abroad) and is relishing all it has to offer her endeavors and creative pursuits as a Singer, Dancer, Model, Educator, Actress, Painter, and Emcee.  The vibrancy and cultural diversity of the city makes it the perfect setting for all she is up to.

She is currently singing with her live band Sierra & the Nomads,  her hiphop/soul/electro/pop
duo the Tape Deck Prophets in New York as well as with performance activists Reverend Billy & the Church of Earthalujah. Past gigs include singing with the reggae group Meta & the Cornerstones, as well as JSan and the Analogue Sons.

She has performed at venues such as B.B.Kings,  High Line Ballroom, Grand Central Station, NuBlu, REDCAT Los Angelos, The Danger, South Paw,  NuBlu, All Songs Considered NPR, Summer on the Hudson Pier I, Celebrate Brooklyn Prospect Park Bandshell, Global Fest @ Webster Hall, 92 Y Tribeca, Le Poisson Rouge & Zebulon. She's also had songs on BBC radio. Sierra is also an active member of BATOY/XANGO- a NYC based collective of DJ's, bands, artists, dancers, fashion designers, cinematographers, yogis, healers, aerialists, drummers & event planners coming together to create conscious revolution through self-expression & global celebration in many forms....

She has also modeled for the past 5 years, in magazines, catalogs & TV morning shows and has been signed with NYC's Wilhelmina & Click Models.

One of Sierra’s favorite things to do is attend live music events, especially at outdoor festivals such as her annual commitments to Burningman & Fingerlakes Grassroots Music festival .  You may see her hula-hooping to a great band,  free-styling in a pick-up jam session, dancing with jingle bells around her waist, or drumming in an African drum circle.  Coming from a very nature-oriented upbringing this is where she is her best, but New York city has the variety and excitement she craves as well as the outlet for her talents.

Sierra’s very extroverted and charming personality and ability to make others feel at ease and able to be themselves around her has been one of her greatest character assets.  Her magnetic charisma, comfortable communication and social grace enable her to connect with almost anyone, even strangers. With her contagious laugh, welcoming smile and radiant spirit, she draws in whoever is around her to want to share and experience more.

Most importantly, Sierra is truly committed to making a difference in the world with the gifts she has been given, and the heart and spirit to do so, whenever an opportunity presents itself. Her mission in life is to be a musical humanitarian, using her natural abilities and talents to help people realize their own power, passion, self-expression and possibilities, as well as their contribution to the earth and to each other and that we are all connected. Her inspiration comes from a vision and hope for greater world peace, in turn making this world/community a better place.
